Designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, the Aalto Theatre is home to the Aalto Music Theatre, the Aalto Ballet Essen and the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra. Once described in the press as 'perhaps the most beautiful German theatre built after 1945', the Aalto Theatre is a landmark of modernist architecture that continues to meet present day demands in terms of building, stage technology and energy efficiency.

In 2013 Hein Mulders took over the directorship of the Aalto-Musiktheater, the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonie Essen. The Aalto Ballett Essen has been directed by Ben Van Cauwenbergh since 2008.
